Update -- The Angels will be grateful for five solid innings from Appier, who has pitched a total of 30 innings in his last six starts. In his last start, in the final game of the league championship series, the Angels led, 3-2, when he left after 5 1/3 innings. In three starts against the Giants, Appier, the former New York Met, is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA. Ortiz will face an Angel lineup that includes his old Montclair Prep teammate, Brad Fullmer. Ortiz did not survive the fifth inning of his lone start in the league championship series, but he went 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA in the division series. In the final two months of the regular season, he went 7-3 with a 2.62 ERA. In three starts against the Angels, he is 2-0 with a 4.58 ERA.
