Banished Royals Are Allowed to Return

October 28, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

The male heirs of Italy's royal family, banished more than 50 years ago for sympathizing with Fascism, may return to their homeland as of Nov. 10, the government announced.

Since 1946, when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy, the constitution has banned male members of the house of Savoy from even visiting Italy. The law has now been changed.

Prince Vittorio Emanuele, 65, the son of the last king of Italy, was younger than 10 when his family fled, and his son, Emanuele Filiberto, was raised in Switzerland. They are not expected to return immediately.
