A dance-crazy night at the clubs

October 31, 2002|Steve Baltin

Put angels, a tiger, Dracula and a mermaid in one fog-filled room and what are they going to do? If Saturday's annual Halloween rave Monster Massive, was any indication, they're going to dance like there's no tomorrow. Nothing fuels a great dance party like the anonymity of costumes from ironic to iconic. Even though the dizzying laser light, stage fog and big-top atmosphere of Hollywood club life can make every night seem like a little slice of All Hallow's Eve, on the night of the real thing the town goes over the top.

Tonight and this weekend, here's where to find the clowns, the stilt walkers, the Goth nurses and even the SpongeBobs that make Halloween the best dance night of the year.

'Madness' at an L.A. landmark

Music magic in a close setting

L.A. festival favorite Doc Martin brings his house-music magic to this multi-act bill. Joining the Doc will be Jason Blakemore, Wally Callerio and others. With a limited capacity of 2,500 and a stellar set of DJs behind the decks, this may be the sleeper event of the night for those who want to share in the Halloween spirit in a more intimate setting.

Eclectic lineup in Long Beach

Long Beach gets neither the love nor attention thrown L.A.'s way, but the LBC scene will be celebrated at Club 49 on Halloween with an eclectic lineup featuring acts from the world of funk, hip-hop, reggae and dance. For those who don't feel like trekking to L.A., this is a nice alternative.

Masquerade Ball 2002, Club 49, tonight. 49 S. Pine Ave., Long Beach. (562) 495-1750.

Costume party with a beat

Local heroes as headliners

Have a ball with a spin-meister

For those who just want the party to keep going, Red grants your wish with Junior Sanchez, a celebrated producer who has worked with Basement Jaxx. But Sanchez is an accomplished spin-meister in his own right, as he will surely show when he steps behind the decks for this house-heavy set.

Red Halloween Ball Featuring Junior Sanchez, Friday. Arena, 6655 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood. (323) 692-3533.

A bit of 'Heaven' due in L.A.

You may not know the name of Dutch singer Do, but you've probably heard it. Her voice on DJ Sammy's hit "Heaven." She will be in town for a midnight show the night after Halloween. Expect a major production with dancers, band and all the stops pulled out.
