Bearcats Win in Overtime

September 03, 2002|From Associated Press

Quarterback Gino Guidugli opened his sophomore season with another amazing comeback.

Guidugli threw a 35-yard touchdown pass with 1:36 remaining, scored the tying two-point conversion on a sneak, then ran 14 yards for a touchdown in overtime as Cincinnati beat Texas Christian, 36-29, on Monday at Cincinnati in the Conference USA opener for both schools.

The Bearcats scored two touchdowns in the final 5:17 of regulation behind Guidugli, who pulled off three fourth-quarter comebacks last season.

After Guidugli scored in overtime on a draw, safety Doug Monaghan intercepted Sean Stilley's pass at the goal line to end the game.

Colorado State was one of three newcomers in the poll, joining Notre Dame and Wisconsin. The Fighting Irish, at No. 23, returned to the rankings for the first time since last September.
