Gentler Swim-Class Techniques Work Too

September 05, 2002

While I commend Marjean Tinoco for trying to save infants' lives ("A Poolful of Guppies and Wails," Aug. 18), I question her methodology. Screaming does not go with the territory, as she claims. When she started teaching swimming 50 years ago, that was indeed the way to teach young children to swim. However, gentle and loving techniques were developed using fun and music and games. I invite Marjean Tinoco to attend one of our conferences to see the advantages of a gentle approach to preschool age swimming.
