Forest Service Expects to Contain Angeles Fire

September 13, 2002|From Times Staff Reports

Full containment of the wildfire that has blackened more than 20,000 acres and destroyed or damaged at least 73 buildings in the San Gabriel Mountains about 15 miles north of Azusa was expected by this morning, the U.S. Forest Service said.

The fire, which started Sept. 1, apparently was caused by a candle used in an animal sacrifice ritual beside California 39 in the Rincon area. The flames spread rapidly north into the mountainous terrain of the Angeles National Forest.
