USC REPORT

Killeen Adds to His Duties

September 18, 2002|Gary Klein

Ryan Killeen was recruited by USC to boot kickoffs into the end zone, a job the sophomore transfer from Mt. San Antonio College is performing well through two games.

On Tuesday, in the aftermath of kicker David Davis' troubles during a 40-3 victory last Saturday at Colorado, Killeen practiced with the field-goal unit.

Davis, a senior, missed an extra-point attempt and had a field-goal and extra-point attempt blocked against the Buffaloes.

"He deserves a chance to compete for the job," USC Coach Pete Carroll said of Killeen.

Senior Zach Wilson is on track to start at right guard Saturday against Kansas State, Carroll said. Wilson, a three-year starter, suffered a strained foot on the first day of training camp and missed the opener against Auburn. He played three series against Colorado and worked with the first-team offense Tuesday.... Cornerback Ronald Nunn sat out most drills after feeling pain in his broken right thumb. After practice, Nunn got his cast reset so that it extends past the tip of his thumb. "It feels 100% better," he said.... Cornerback Marcell Allmond also is wearing a cast for a right wrist fracture suffered against Colorado on a punt-return play.... USC's game against Oregon State on Sept. 28 at the Coliseum will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be televised by Fox Sports Net.... Linebacker Melvin Simmons, who made nine tackles against Colorado after being hospitalized for two days because of an infection in his lower left leg, was held out of most drills.
