Gunmen Storm Hindu Temple, Kill at Least 29

September 25, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

Three gunmen hurling grenades and wielding AK-47s stormed a Hindu temple, killing at least 29 men, women and children and trapping others inside for hours until Indian commandos stormed the complex and killed the assailants.

The attack in Gandhinagar--capital of the western state of Gujarat, where at least 1,000 died in Hindu-Muslim bloodshed earlier this year--fueled fears of new, widespread religious clashes.

Police said more than 70 people were injured. No group immediately claimed responsibility, but Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani said the incident appeared tied to elections in Jammu and Kashmir state, the only majority-Muslim state in largely Hindu India.
