Police to Stop Asking Protesters' Affiliations

April 11, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

New York City police have stopped questioning arrested antiwar demonstrators about their political affiliations and are destroying the resulting data, officials said.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the practice was stopped after complaints that it violated the Constitution, though he disagreed that it did.

Chris Dunn of the New York Civil Liberties Union said, "They are investigating and interrogating people about protected political activity" and "clearly coercing people into giving up this information."
