Prisoners Riot at U.S.-Run POW Camp

April 14, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Hurling rocks, bottles filled with sand and wooden stakes, detainees at the only permanent U.S.-run camp for prisoners of war in Iraq riot almost daily, military officials said.

Anger over slow food lines or disputes between ethnic groups can spark uprisings at the prison that houses about 6,000 Iraqis in long white open tents near the southern city of Umm al Qasr, they said.
