It's Major Victory for Park

Golfer Jane Park shot a three-under-par 68 Thursday to win her first AJGA major title with a four-stroke victory at the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls' National Championship at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Del.

With her 11-under-par performance, Park, who will be a junior this fall at Beaumont High, broke the 54-hole tournament record of 206, set by Christie Kerr in 1995. Amie Cochran, an incoming senior at West Torrance High, shot a 71 to finish third at even-par 208.

Trent Leon of Dallas shot a par 71 to take the lead at 214 after the third round of the AJGA HP Boys' Junior Championship at the Westin Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla.

Yorba Linda's Derek Sipe, who will be a senior this fall at Anaheim Esperanza High, was a stroke off the lead after the second round but shot an 86 for a three-day total of 227.

Jason Kang of Torrance shot a 71 for a three-day total of 224 and Kenny Kim of Cerritos shot a 73 (226). The 72-hole tournament concludes today.

Santa Monica's Mayumi Kobayashi, who will be a senior this fall at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High, shot a final-round 78 to win the girls' division of the AJGA Lockton Kansas City Junior by two strokes over Mandi McConnell of Grand Blanc, Mich., at the par-72 Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate in Overland Park, Kan.

Kobayashi led all three rounds on the way to winning her first AJGA event, finishing with a tournament total of 224.

Gayle Hunter of Riverside continued her unbeaten streak at the Junior Olympics, scoring 5,134 points to win the young women's heptathlon (ages 17-18) over the first two days of competition at Miami.

The Riverside North High senior, who is competing for the West Valley Eagles of Canoga Park, has never lost at the Junior Olympics in the triathlon, pentathlon or heptathlon. She won the 200-meter dash (25.09 seconds), long jump (19 feet 2 1/2 inches) and tied for first in the high jump (5-5).
