Bikes Losing Traction as Mode of Transportation

August 03, 2003

The fact that road bikes are the only bright spot in an otherwise lackluster U.S. bike market ("Pedaling to Profit," July 27) is a sad commentary on our reluctance to use bicycles for transportation.

Kids who prefer skateboards and scooters and adults who drive a few blocks to do local errands are part of the problem.

Bike manufacturers and advertisers, who focus on and thereby glorify racing and off-road bikes instead of bikes equipped to carry things, don't help either.
