Carson to Elect New Mayor in 2004

August 06, 2003|From a Times Staff Writer

In a rare display of unanimity, the Carson City Council voted Tuesday to hold a special election in March to replace former Mayor Daryl W. Sweeney, who faces as much as 10 years in prison for extortion.

The 4-0 vote came one week after Sweeney, 45, pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges and resigned.

The council had three options on Tuesday: to appoint a replacement, to hold a special election or to wait until the city's next regular municipal election in 2005.

The council chose to hold the election in March 2004 to coincide with the California presidential primary.

The vote, which was greeted by applause, came after residents urged the council to hold an election.
