Health Officials Investigating Hantavirus Case

August 09, 2003|From Associated Press

BISHOP, Calif. — Health officials said Friday that they were investigating the state's first reported case this year of hantavirus, a rare and sometimes fatal disease spread by rodents.

An unidentified Inyo County man recovered from the disease, a state health department spokeswoman said.

It was not immediately clear how or where he had contracted the illness.

The man was diagnosed in late July after being hospitalized, said Steve Frederickson of the Inyo County Environmental Health Department. He was released early this month.
