Furniture Makers May Cut Ties to UFW

August 09, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Nearly 130 furniture manufacturing employees want to sever ties with the United Farm Workers because they say the union hasn't helped them earn higher salaries or gain better health-care benefits.

Workers of Guy Chaddock & Co. in Bakersfield signed a petition in hopes of stopping the high-end furniture business from renewing a contract with the union.

If the company doesn't renew, the 200 workers covered under the contract would have more support for their union decertification efforts.

The representation for the furniture makers is the first for the UFW outside the agriculture industry.
