He Can't See Why This Item Is Banned

August 09, 2003

The Coliseum is the greatest college football venue in the country. I've enjoyed USC football at the Coliseum for more years than I can remember.

Recently added to the list of contraband items for this season are "binocular cases". Now I understand the post 9/11 need for increased security at the Coliseum, but how does banning binocular cases increase safety or security? What is the difference between a binocular case and a purse? All bags (including binocular cases) are inspected before entering the Coliseum. What is in binocular cases? Binoculars! What is in a purse? Lord only knows.

Maybe The Times or its readers can figure this one out. As for me, this is security gone to the ridiculous.
