High honors for Alaska's Katmai

August 10, 2003

Thanks to Carl Duncan for his excellent article ["In Katmai, a Walk on the Edge," July 27].

During the summers of 2000 and 2001, I was a National Park Service seasonal park ranger-pilot assigned to Katmai. Based in King Salmon, Alaska, I flew a Cessna 206 floatplane into Katmai National Park and Preserve on a daily basis. I lost count of the number of times that I thanked God for the opportunity to experience and help protect such a beautiful place. Katmai is definitely one of the many jewels in the National Park Service's splendid crown.
