W.Va. Governor Won't Run

August 13, 2003|From Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Gov. Bob Wise announced Tuesday that he would not seek a second term, ending weeks of speculation about the Democrat's political future.

Wise is West Virginia's first governor not to seek reelection since the state Constitution was changed in 1970 to allow governors to serve a second consecutive term.

Wise dropped out of the 2004 race three months after acknowledging he cheated on his wife of 19 years. The 55-year-old governor was romantically linked to Angela Mascia, who oversees European projects for the West Virginia Development Office.

Mascia, 35, was married at the time but has since divorced. Her ex-husband, Phillip Frye, vowed to remind voters of the affair, even by running for governor himself.

Wise said his family has returned to Washington, D.C., where they lived during the 18 years he served as a congressman.
