Conference Highlights West's Water Problems

August 13, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

The nation's top water manager said New Mexico is a poster child for the West's water crisis.

Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner John Keys III said the spectrum of water issues troubling the West -- population growth, agricultural needs, environmental protection, tribal interests and drought -- have merged in New Mexico, creating the need for long-range planning.

The bureau brought its Water 2025 campaign to Albuquerque as part of its regional water conferences aimed at gathering public opinion on water use and ways to sustain supplies.
