Broadcom Ordered to Pay in Patent Case

Broadcom Corp., the biggest maker of cable modem chips, said it was ordered to pay $3 million for infringing a Microtune Inc. patent for putting a television tuner on a chip.

Broadcom also must pay Microtune's legal fees, plus 5.5% interest, U.S. District Judge Paul Brown in Sherman, Texas, ruled. Microtune Chief Executive James Fontaine said the total amount would be $9 million to $10 million.

A federal jury in March determined that Broadcom intentionally infringed a Microtune patent. Brown had ordered Broadcom to stop selling some silicon tuners. He did not extend the order to newer models.

Irvine-based Broadcom said it would appeal the verdict.

Broadcom shares fell 61 cents to $21.42 on Nasdaq. Microtune shares rose 10 cents to $2.85.
