Woman in Hospital With Probable West Nile Virus

August 15, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

A Bay Area woman who was recently bitten by mosquitoes in Colorado is hospitalized with a probable case of West Nile virus, state health officials said Thursday.

If the 47-year-old Alameda County woman turns out to have the mosquito-borne disease, it will be the first reported case in California this year and only the second in the state since the virus first appeared domestically in New York in 1999.

Officials with the California Department of Health Services said the woman is suffering from muscle weakness in her legs, one symptom of the sometimes fatal disease. She most likely fell ill while visiting Colorado late last month. Officials declined to identify the woman or give any more details about her.

There are no other signs that the disease has arrived in California.
