Shocking the Conscience

August 16, 2003

"No End to Murder's Grief" (Aug. 9), on youth and gun violence, reminds us that Compton is not some isolated geographical location but a local neighborhood, and that we are all responsible, in part, for the untimely deaths of those seven kids. Bringing exposure to such issues compels common citizens to examine how they can nurture the very institutions that allow such problems to persist. As concerned neighbors, we need to vote to allocate more of our state budget to education and civic services for such communities.

Articles like this sharpen our collective awareness by bringing such matters back to the front of our consciences.
