Heat Takes Toll on Seminoles

August 20, 2003|From Associated Press

Four Florida State players were treated for heat-related problems as the Seminoles battled 90-degree temperatures near the end of a three-hour practice Tuesday morning.

Starting linebacker Michael Boulware and center John Frady each spent time in a tub of ice water near the end of practice and were later carted to the locker room. Boulware was reported to have been suffering from heat cramps.

Tight end Matt Henshaw was also carted off the field.

Guard Bobby Meeks was sent to the locker room because of asthma problems. Meeks, who is battling Eric Broe for the starting job, has been slowed by the condition several times.

The Seminoles had been practicing for much of the last two weeks in milder temperatures. Coach Bobby Bowden said he instituted more breaks in practice in an effort to combat the heat.

A judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by 15 Alabama State football players seeking the reinstatement of coach L.C. Cole and assistant Johnnie Cole.

Montgomery County Circuit Judge Tracey McCooey said that the players had no legal standing in the case.

Alabama State fired the Coles and assistant Richard Freeman after concluding in an internal investigation that the coaches played ineligible players and paid for strippers to entertain recruits.

L.C. Cole has denied those allegations.

Alabama State hired former University of Memphis assistant Charles Coe III as interim coach.

Louisiana State freshman receiver Amp Hill underwent surgery on his right knee and could miss the season.

Hill, a highly recruited player from Jacksonville, Fla., appeared to be earning a spot in LSU's rotation before being slowed by injuries to his knee ligaments a week ago.

Former Florida State quarterback Adrian McPherson has enrolled at Tennessee State. School officials accepted his admissions application after he applied during late registration.
