August 25, 2003|Bob Mieszerski

Dessert, the lesser-regarded half of the Thoroughbred Corp.-owned entry, went wire to wire in winning the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks, a Grade I event run four races after the Pacific Classic on Sunday.

Making her first appearance in a graded stakes, Dessert -- trained by Richard Mandella and ridden by Corey Nakatani -- held off Solar Echo by a neck and won in an Oaks record 1:47.04 for the 1 1/8 miles on turf.

Atlantic Ocean, coupled in the wagering with Dessert and a runner-up in the Grade II San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 2, finished fifth.

Sky Jack, the 3-2 favorite ridden by Russell Baze for Southern California-based trainer Doug O'Neill, won the $250,000 Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs at Auburn, Wash., in a track-record time of 1:33.
