Second Trial Convicts Man of 1992 Murder

August 30, 2003|From Staff and Wire Reports

A man whose first-degree murder conviction was overturned after analysis of DNA evidence was found guilty Friday of second-degree murder in his retrial for the 1992 shooting death of an ex-girlfriend.

Michael Kevin Claude, 31, faces 20 years to life in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 26.

Evidence in his first trial included semen in the body of Nancy Elsayed, 19. She was shot eight times on June 23, 1992. Advanced DNA testing also found sperm from another man.

A judge ruled that Claude had received ineffective counsel and ordered a new trial.
