PIPELINE, Hawaii — On his last wave of the day, Andy Irons picked up enough points to win the Xbox Pipeline Masters on Friday, enabling him to hold off Kelly Slater and win the Assn. of Surfing Professionals world championship for the second consecutive year.
"I was a ball of nerves the whole day, it was so emotional," Irons said after the final. "I started getting really bad cramps and I broke a couple of boards. I didn't think it would come out this way, but this is a dream come true."
