Snow Spreads From Plains to Maryland

The Nation | IN BRIEF / NATIONWIDE

February 16, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Travelers were stranded in Iowa and Illinois as plows struggled to keep up with a storm that blew heavy snow from the Plains to Maryland.

The deepest snowfall was in Omaha and Des Moines, each with 9 inches.

But the heaviest potential accumulations -- 18 to 30 inches by this evening -- were forecast in the central Appalachians, the National Weather Service said.

Sports events were canceled and an Omaha antiwar protest was postponed.
