As expected, Oak Park High turned in a balanced effort Wednesday night in the opening round of the Southern Section Division III-A boys' basketball playoffs.
Senior guard Pete Winningham scored 25 points, junior forward Ryan Klein added 19 points and had eight rebounds and senior guard Kyle Daley had 10 points and six assists to lead the Eagles to a 65-48 victory over visiting Covina Northview.
Oak Park (20-6) had a 26-17 halftime lead over the Vikings (12-14).
In other boys' basketball playoff games:
Sophomore Dwain Williams scored 21 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to lead host Temecula Chaparral (17-11) to a 68-60 victory over Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills (13-15) in a Division I-A wild-card game. Williams made all 12 of his free throws and had five steals.
Aaron Brink scored 16 points and Mario Parrish scored 15 for Cerritos Valley Christian (13-15), which upset Sun Valley Village Christian (18-9) in overtime, 56-51, in a Division IV-AA first-round game.
Curtis Allen scored 29 points and had 11 rebounds and teammate D.J. Wright added 25 points and eight assists to lead defending Division V-AA champion and top-seeded Rolling Hills Prep (17-9) to a 110-54 rout of Glendale Academy.
Coach Andrew Hunter earned his 200th coaching victory at L.A. Daniel Murphy with a 59-51 Division IV-AA victory over San Pedro Mary Star.
Robson Dufau had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Sean Cunningham added 18 points for host Murphy (18-9).
In a boys' soccer Division III wild-card game, Chris Kridner, Tony Cisneros and Oliver Polo scored for visiting Fullerton Sunny Hills in a 3-1 victory over Hacienda Heights Wilson. The Lancers (10-8-3) advance to Saturday's first-round match at Pasadena Muir. Daniel Rivero had the only goal for Wilson (12-8-4).
In a girls' soccer Division IV wild-card game, Lety Mota led Pico Rivera El Rancho to its first-ever playoff victory by scoring three goals and assisting on another in a 5-1 win over Montebello Schurr. Nancy Robles and Nayely Hernandez also scored for the Dons (10-8-4).
