Zoos Close Bird Displays Over Fears of Disease

January 02, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

A bird-killing disease sweeping Southern California has forced the closing of aviaries at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park, according to officials.

The rare birds will be off-limits to public display as a precaution against exotic Newcastle disease. An outbreak of the disease was reported in September, prompting quarantines in San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles and Orange counties. One million infected chickens were destroyed at a San Bernardino County egg ranch this week.
