Edwards Plans Bid for White House in 2004

Democratic Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina will run for president in 2004, telling guests at a party he will publicly announce his plans today.

The announcement gives him the jump on several Democratic colleagues expected to run.

Vermont Gov. Howard Dean and Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kerry are running, and Missouri Rep. Richard A. Gephardt is expected to announce soon. Other possibilities are Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Florida Sen. Bob Graham.
