Adjectival Conspiracy Against Republicans

January 03, 2003

In the "Inside Politics" column (Dec. 30), Patt Morrison presumes to instruct us that the grammatically correct way to refer to the political party to which she is so obviously an adherent is "Democratic Party," not "Democrat Party." The Democrats and their cheerleaders in the media for decades have been foisting this spurious designation on the public in order to advance the implicit, subliminal message that the loyal opposition, if it is not the "Democratic" Party, must be nondemocratic and not interested in democracy. Republicans belong to the Republican Party, and Democrats belong to the Democrat Party.

On the other hand, if they insist on "Democratic Party," shouldn't the members be called "Democratics"?
