Greek Orthodox 9/11 Payouts Finished

January 04, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has finished disbursing nearly all of the $2.1 million raised to help victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Church leaders said final checks worth $280,000 had been written to 14 Greek Orthodox widows. Many Greek Orthodox parishioners rallied around the fund when the tiny St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was destroyed by falling rubble from the World Trade Center.

"The outpouring of love from the faithful of our archdiocese has been overwhelming, and testifies to the magnanimity of our people, who responded so generously to the needs of those so adversely affected by the barbaric attacks," said Archbishop Demetrios, the church's leader.

An eight-member committee awarded grants to 20 Greek Orthodox children who were left orphans in the attacks.

Other large donations were made to the Cantor Fitzgerald Fund, which lost 600 employees, and to the Fund of the Port Authority Police.
