L.A. getting a same-day read of the N.Y. Post

Gotcha!

For New York transplants in need of an ink-smudged fix, the New York Post begins distributing same-day editions in Southern California this week.

Famous for its Page Six gossip and catchy headlines such as "Headless Body in Topless Bar," the tabloid is not expanding to become a national paper but simply responding to reader demand, said its general manager, Geoff Booth.

"There are a number of New Yorkers in Southern California who want to read New York news," Booth said, adding that the tabloid will not change its content other than to add local horse racing pages.

Sridhar Pappu, a media columnist for the New York Observer, said the foray into Southern California seems designed to attract a very specific readership.

"Considering the players they cover -- people like Barry Diller and Harvey Weinstein," Pappu said, "it's a natural extension."

The Post already offers a same-day edition in South Florida, where it sells fewer than 10,000 copies.

The tabloid, which will be printed at a facility in Ontario, will be available at about 1,800 newsstands in L.A. and Orange counties, and through limited home delivery.

A dose of New York will cost $1 in Los Angeles compared to 25 cents in New York.
