Rebel Attack in Colombia Kills 8 Police Officers

BOGOTA, Colombia — The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the nation's largest rebel army, attacked a police convoy outside the capital at dawn Tuesday, killing eight officers and injuring five others, police said.

Police Col. Luis Eduardo Herrera said rebels from the 17,000-member FARC detonated a powerful bomb as the convoy drove along a mountain road about 50 miles west of Bogota.

The blast killed five officers, and rebel fire claimed three more. The officers had been returning to the capital after helping boost security in the town of Quipile during a festival.

President Alvaro Uribe condemned the attack. "We must continue on the road to defeat the violent ones, as that is the only option this nation has to move ahead," he told reporters.
