Home Schoolers Should Pay Their Own Way

January 09, 2003

In "Home Cyber Schools, and Critics, Growing" (Jan. 6), Loretta Rieger, a parent who home-schools her son, states: "I don't want to have to spend my time developing a curriculum or writing lesson plans. I just want to teach." Using such logic, perhaps I should request that the state and federal governments use Medi-Cal and Medicare funds to send me books on performing medical procedures. After all, I don't want to spend my time developing a surgical manual, I just want to operate.

Teaching is a profession that requires years of college training and student teaching to hone the skills necessary to educate children. If individuals choose to home-school their children, let them use their own money. My tax dollars should pay for professionally trained, state-credentialed teachers.
