Tomey Not Interested in Job

January 09, 2003|Steve Henson

Former Arizona Coach Dick Tomey said Wednesday he has had discussions with UCLA, but is not interested in becoming defensive coordinator.

"I love UCLA but I wouldn't consider coming as a coordinator," Tomey said from a coaches' convention in New Orleans. "I'm standing behind Duane Akina."

Akina, the secondary coach at Texas and an assistant under Tomey at Arizona and Hawaii for nearly two decades, interviewed Monday with Bruin Coach Karl Dorrell but no offer has been made. Dorrell still needs to hire offensive and defensive coordinators.
