Rodman Accused of Domestic Violence

January 11, 2003|Dave McKibben | Times Staff Writer

Adding to his string of run-ins with the law, former NBA star Dennis Rodman was arrested early Friday morning after a woman reported that he assaulted her, Newport Beach police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, called 911 on a friend's cell phone at 2 a.m., police said. She was picked up by officers in a parking lot at West Balboa Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, not far from Rodman's beachfront home.

"The woman had cuts and swelling to her upper lip and she claimed she had a bump on her head," Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman said.

Officers went to Rodman's Seashore Drive residence and interviewed him and several witnesses before Rodman was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, a felony.

"Rodman and the woman had some sort of dating relationship, but we don't know the extent of it," Shulman said. "They are not married."

The woman was not hospitalized. Rodman, 41, posted $25,000 bail and was released later that morning.
