Students Return From 3-Week Holiday Break

January 16, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Students returned to school after a three-week vacation -- an extended break that officials hope will increase attendance for Latinos who travel to Mexico for the holidays.

Before the change, students were missing more than a week of classes, which cost the district state funding that is calculated by attendance.

So the Washington Unified School District, which includes 11 schools in West Sacramento, adjusted its schedule to accommodate Latinos, who represent 37% of the district's 7,000 student enrollment.
