Fifth Race Full of Winners

January 16, 2003|BOB MIESZERSKI

The seven fillies and mares in today's fifth race at Santa Anita are not camera shy.

Vital Asset, Miss Jeanne Cat, Square Dance, Sweetcakesanshakes, Kona Queen, Adorable One and Mon Ange have combined to win 22 races in 52 starts entering the $57,000 optional claimer at six furlongs.

The most prolific has been Kona Queen. The 5-year-old Aloha Prospector mare has won six of 10 starts and has been third in three of her losses.

The elder stateswoman of the bunch is Sweetcakesanshakes. She has won five of 13 for trainer Leonard Dorfman and co-owner Mike Willman. However, she has been away since March 30, 2000.

Vital Asset is the only member of the field who is perfect at Santa Anita. The 4-year-old Allen's Prospect filly is two for two in Arcadia. She hasn't been out since beating recent winner Like Magic by a head Nov. 3.

Race of the day: Lake William, a two-time winner down Santa Anita's hillside turf course, will make his first start for trainer Vladimir Cerin in today's second race after being claimed last month. The $65,000 optional claimer at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf also attracted Morocco, Kachamandi, Cayoke, Ecstatic and Grandiser.

Who's hot: Patrick Valenzuela. The rider leads the standings at Santa Anita with 19 victories through the first 16 days.

Who's not: Isaias Enriquez. The jockey is 0 for 32 at Santa Anita.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Emphasize and Countless Moment in the sixth, Fade To Blue, Leprechaun Kid and the Tenaja Trail-Woody Haze entry in the seventh and singling Fierce Heart in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/44. Money: Previous day/meet total: $11.20/$230. Total money bet: $274.
