Fire Stations Are 'Safe Havens' for Newborns

January 18, 2003|From Times Staff Reports

The City Council on Friday officially declared city fire stations "safe havens" where unwanted newborns will be received, no questions asked.

Under the council plan, approved on a 12-0 vote, the city will launch a campaign to inform mothers that state law allows them to leave infants at fire stations or hospital emergency rooms up to 72 hours after birth without fear of arrest or prosecution and as an alternative to abandonment.
