No. 7 Tar Heels Win at the Buzzer

January 28, 2003|From Associated Press

Given one final chance to avert an upset, North Carolina came up with the perfect play -- without a second to spare.

Coretta Brown made a driving layup at the buzzer to help the No. 7-ranked Tar Heels rally from an 11-point deficit in the second half to defeat Maryland, 83-82, Monday night at College Park, Md.

North Carolina trailed, 82-81, when Coach Sylvia Hatchell called a timeout and set up a play for Brown to work around a screen set by Nikita Bell on the left side.

Bell scored a career-high 30 points for the Tar Heels, 17-2 overall and 6-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina trailed, 55-44, early in the second half and 79-74 with 1:58 left. Playing against a Maryland team coming off a 101-52 loss to top-ranked Duke, the Tar Heels trailed for much of the game and ended up allowing season highs in points and shooting percentage (47%).

Chrissy Fisher had 20 points and Renneika Razor had 19 for the Terrapins (8-11, 2-6). Razor put Maryland up, 82-81, with a driving layup with nine seconds left, and she was fouled on the play.

But Razor missed the free throw, setting the stage for Brown's game-winner.

No. 9 Louisiana Tech 97, Centenary 47 -- Trina Frierson and Sultra Harding each scored 16 points to help the Lady Techsters (15-2) win a nonconference game at Ruston, La. for their 13th victory in a row. Centenary is 4-13.
