Sheriff Closes Saticoy Center

July 23, 2003|From a Times Staff Writer

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department has shut down the Saticoy Resource Center to help close the department's possible $10-million budget gap.

Volunteers staffed the center on Los Angeles Avenue, which hosted parenting classes, after-school tutoring and Lions Club meetings. Its closure would save the sheriff's office $37,000, said department spokeswoman Sgt. Renee Ferguson. "We're just trying to meet our budget. Any cut is painful," she said.

Ferguson said the department would continue to look for spending cuts at the service level with the least effect on the public. The center was open three days a week. It was unclear Tuesday if the center's programs would resume at another location.
