Driver, 80, and Wife Are Arrested in Theft, Assault

June 03, 2003|From a Times Staff Writer

An elderly Fontana couple has been arrested after allegedly stealing cosmetics from a beauty supply shop and backing a car into a store manager attempting to thwart their getaway, police said.

"I thought the Bonnie and Clyde days were over," said Eugenia Burney, the manager of Sally's Beauty Supply in Fontana who suffered a mildly injured back and left leg when she was struck Saturday. "Everyone I tell this to freaks out."

Burney was injured when a Honda Accord driven by 80-year-old Kenneth Smith ran into her as she tried to write down the license plate number. Fontana Police spokeswoman Donna Rowe said officers arrested Smith and his wife, Joanne Pina-Smith, 63, Sunday morning.

Rowe said police found Smith resting on a chair, but Pina-Smith had climbed into the home's attic and sat atop the access door. After a 15-minute struggle, Rowe said police entered the attic and took her into custody.
