Trying to Inter-tain You

June 03, 2003|Houston Mitchell

A look at some of the interesting and not so interesting interleague matchups coming up this week:

* Oakland at Philadelphia: Friday through Sunday. How many A's fans remain in the Philadelphia area? The A's left Philadelphia after the 1954 season.

* Boston at Pittsburgh: Today through Thursday. These teams last met 100 years ago. The occasion? The first World Series.

* Baltimore at St. Louis: Friday through Sunday. Baltimore hasn't been to St. Louis since they played there as the Browns. The franchise moved after the 1953 season.

* New York Yankees at Chicago Cubs: Friday through Sunday. The Yankees return to Wrigley Field. Will Jason Giambi call his shot, as Babe Ruth allegedly did?

* Detroit at San Diego: Today through Thursday. The two worst teams in baseball. Hundreds of fans will be there to watch.

* Tampa Bay at Houston: Friday through Sunday. Devil Ray fans (both of them) can brag that neither team has won a playoff series.

* Kansas City at Dodgers: Today through Thursday. The series to decide which shade of blue is prettier.

* Angels: At Montreal (today through Thursday) -- A U.S. team plays a Canadian team in Puerto Rico. At Florida (Friday through Sunday) -- Angels visit another team that faded quickly after winning a World Series.

* Dodgers: Besides the Royals, L.A. will play host to the Chicago White Sox over the weekend in a repeat of the 1959 World Series matchup.
