Police Seek San Jose Girl, 9, and Stranger Who Abducted Her

The State

June 08, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

SAN JOSE — A 9-year-old girl was kidnapped Friday afternoon by a man who was hiding in her family's home, and beat her mother and older brother before taking off with her in his car, police said.

Details of the abduction of Janette Tamayo remained sketchy, but it appeared that the intruder broke into the home through a window, said Katherine Unger, a San Jose Police spokeswoman.

Unger said that Janette's mother and 13-year-old brother told authorities they had never seen the man before and that officers believe he was a stranger to them.

"These things are pretty rare, a random kidnapping," she said.
