LETTERS TO THE TIMES

A Study in Democracy

June 13, 2003

Re "Berkeley Honors Grad Was One Poor Student," June 8: Duane De Witt is certainly a hero, but the story within the story is much greater. Why does a person have to go through this kind of punishment in a country that is spending a billion dollars a day on what we used to call defense, but under the current administration is offense? Think of the thousands who, trying as hard as they were able, never made it.

Think of a country without the addicted and mentally ill sleeping in the streets. This man will not be recognized by those who lean to the right because he's studying those no-no Scandinavian countries that carry the word "social" preceding "democracy."
