China Dam Project Robs Our Global Heritage

June 16, 2003

Re "Three Gorges Dam May Be Boon for China," letters, June 10: What, no letters against the dam? I am tired of opinions that seem to forget that we are not alone on this planet. The Three Gorges were habitat not only for the hapless folk who had to relocate but to hundreds of thousands of other creatures. (Oh, animals! They don't count.)

The entire ecological state of the region has been devastated. Yes. That counts. And I don't mention the archeological and historical sites destroyed. Have you ever seen the extraordinary paintings by Chinese artists over the ages depicting this natural wonder that belongs not only to the nation it happens to be in but to a global heritage? What loss. What waste. And it's forever! But hey, who cares? It's all in the name of progress.
