Democrats: Steer Left

June 19, 2003

"Group Nudging Democratic Party to Center" (June 17), about the New Democrat Network and its intention to pull the Democratic Party toward the center, makes me want to cry. Don't they realize that Bill Clinton's centrist policies only blurred the difference between the two major parties? Disaffected liberals went to alternatives like Ralph Nader, paving the way for the Republicans to campaign in the center, steal the election and immediately go to work on a right-wing agenda that no true Democrat can embrace.

We Democrats need to get behind a candidate like former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who stands for the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.
