Phillip Reid, Rio Mesa, Sr. 1,600 meters


Lionel Larry, Dominguez, Jr. 100, 200: Won state title in the 200 and tied for fifth in the 100 after winning both events in Southern Section Division III finals and Masters Meet. Has bests of 10.60 seconds in the 100 and 20.87 in the 200.

David Gettis, Dorsey, So. 400: Had a career best of 49.17 midway through May, but won state title in 47.41 after posting a yearly state-leading time of 47.14 in his qualifying heat.

Duane Solomon, Lompoc Cabrillo, Sr. 800: Arizona State signee ran a career-best 1:49.79 to win state title and capped an undefeated season Sunday with a victorious time of 1:50.16 in the Golden West Invitational.

Mohamed Trafeh, Duarte, Jr. 3,200: Placed fourth in state championships after winning Masters Meet. Ran a school-record 8:55.87 to place eighth in a talent-laden race in the Arcadia Invitational in April.

Craig Woods, Dominguez, Sr. 110 High Hurdles: California signee placed fourth in state championships after winning Southern Section Division III final in career-best 14.28 and Masters Meet in wind-aided 14.08.

Brian Payne, Trabuco Hills, Jr. 300 Int. Hurdles: Ran a career-best 37.87 to win the Southern Section Division I title and placed second in state championships.

Carson, 400 Relay: (Joshua Ford, Sr.; Brandon Myles, Sr.; Marcus Davison, Sr.; Kevin McCall, Sr.) Won City Section and state titles and clocked a school-record 41.03 while finishing second in Golden West Invitational.

Long Beach Poly, 1,600 Relay: (Julian Sylve, Jr.; Rodney Van, Jr.; Malik Muhammad, Sr.; Derrick Jones, Jr.) Won third consecutive state title in event after running a 3:11.22, the fastest time in the state in seven years, to win Penn Relays in April.

Matthew Carter, El Modena, Sr. High Jump: Had second-place finishes in Southern Section Division II final, Masters Meet and state championships. He has a best of 6-10.

Donald Appanaitis, Loyola, Sr. Pole Vault: Placed sixth in state championships after finishing fifth in Southern Section Masters Meet and second in Division II final. Cleared a school-record 16 feet in a dual meet in April.

Rudy Burgess, Desert, Sr. Long Jump, Triple Jump: Headed to Arizona State on a football scholarship, he won state title in the triple jump with a school-record 50-4 1/4 effort and placed third in the long jump. Holds school record in the long jump at 24-1 1/2.

Mark Lewis, Arroyo Grande, Jr. Shotput: Leader of an outstanding group of throwers at Arroyo Grande, he placed second in state championships with a career-best 60-3 1/4 after finishing second in Southern Section Division I final and first in Masters Meet.

Kyle Davis-Hammerquist, Webb, Jr. Discus: Southern Section Division IV and Masters Meet champion placed fifth in state championships. Has a best of 186-10.

Coaching Staff of the Year: Loyola: (Head coach: Greg Wells. Assistants: Jon Dawson, Lalo Diaz, Brian Held, Fernie Hernandez, Frank Meza, Mike Porterfield, Al Sanford, Marwin Willard). Loyola extended its dual-meet winning streak to 104 victories and won the Southern Section Division II title.
