Mormons Told Not to Come to U.S. Meeting

March 08, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Mormon church is telling its foreign leaders to stay home during this time of global uncertainty, rather than traveling to Salt Lake City next month for the church's biannual conference.

The church will conduct accompanying training sessions via satellite instead.

"[This] will allow area presidencies to remain closer to the church membership in their assigned areas and will avoid problems caused by potential uncertainties," said Dale Bills, spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The church doesn't want all its leaders to be in Salt Lake City when possible war with Iraq or terrorist activity could disrupt travel.
